2 - All the Seasons of Spring

2 - All the Seasons of Spring

Welcome, listeners! In this podcast, we’re exploring what spring truly means. Spring is a time of renewal, and it’s often associated with flowers blooming, birds returning, and longer days. When I think of spring, I feel a sense of hope and renewal.

Let’s dive into the science behind spring. Our planet’s 23.5-degree tilt is responsible for the changing of seasons. As our Earth rotates around the sun, different hemispheres are exposed to the sun’s light. This results in the phenomenon of spring and the other seasons too. Astronomical spring, also known as the vernal equinox, is defined as the moment when the sun is directly over the equator.

We’re going to debunk a myth about spring and explore how other planets experience their seasons. From Venus to Saturn, each planet has its unique tilt and orbit, resulting in vastly different seasonal experiences. Uranus is in a league of its own!

We will also discuss meteorological spring and how it’s determined in different countries. In the United States, March, April, and May are considered spring months, while in Australia and New Zealand, spring is from September to November. It is more about the weather.

Remember, there’s a world of wonder out there waiting for you to explore!

Jill McKinley

I’m Jill from the Northwoods. Professionally, I work in Health IT, where I untangle complex systems and help people use technology more effectively. But at heart, I’m a curious lifelong learner—always exploring how things work, why people grow the way they do, and how even the smallest steps can spark real transformation. That curiosity fuels everything I do, from problem-solving at work to sharing insights through my creative projects.

My journey wasn’t always easy. Growing up, I faced a rough childhood, and books became my lifeline. They introduced me to voices of ancient wisdom, modern psychology, and the natural world around me. Those pages taught me resilience, gave me perspective, and helped me see that wisdom is everywhere—waiting to be noticed, gathered, and shared.
